Rebusquilla Gráfica

Analyzing popular graphic of "picos" in Barranquilla

What is a Pico?

The "picos" are a unique feature of Colombia's Caribbean coast culture, consisting of flamboyantly customized sound systems.

How to create a photographic documentation record of the popular graphics on ‘'picos” in Barranquilla, which can serve as a reference for visual designers?

Rebusquilla is a collective of graphic designers that seeks to analyze the different graphic manifestations generated by the context of “picos”, in order to classify them according to design themes. This contributes to enriching the graphic knowledge of visual designers, through the production of volumes whose content strengthens the themes of popular graphics presented in the city of Barranquilla: “picos”.

The name "Rebusquilla" comes from the word "rebusque," an economic activity that has become common among the popular population of Barranquilla due to unemployment. This includes shoe shiners, street vendors, sellers of "arroz de lisa" wrapped in "bijao" leaves on the streets, "peto," "raspao" (shaved ice) sold from immaculately decorated carts, and people who sell "tintos" (small cups of coffee) while carrying them on their shoulders. The analogy lies in the relationship between the concept of "rebusque" and the search and analysis that the collective will conduct on popular graphics.

"Quilla" is the abbreviation of the name of the city of Barranquilla, which contextualizes the project.

"Gráfica" refers to all popular manifestations (music, activities, fashion, society, etc.), and this word specifies the area in which the project will work.

Typographic workshop

Typographic workshop led by Luis Pantoja, owner of the pickup "El Gran che" and an empirical artist of "picotera" graphics, who taught basic techniques for developing typography on black base posters, which were then put into practice by the course attendees. The workshop was attended by 15 people, including graphic design professors, students from the same faculty, and owners of “picos” replicas.
